The department has links with local industry and makes good use of Herts SETPOINT and other connections to bring in people to speak to students. Recent speakers have delivered talks on a broad range of subjects to different year groups including the importance of sustainability, neuroscience, space exploration & increasing human fertility. Within the past year we have had visits from eminent Ecologists, Cosmologists and Cancer scientists to talk with all year groups and inspire young scientists.

Educational Visits and Field Trips

These are organised as available and appropriate and have included in recent times trips to CERN in Geneva, working with Astrium on developing a drill for the Mars rover and a practical science day at GSK for gifted and talented in association with McLaren Formula 1. This is in addition to our annual A level field trip and trip to the Royal Veterinary College for prospective “Medivet” students. Students have also recently had the chance to visit local nature reserves and Astronomy facilities at the University of Cambridge

We also run school trips for whole year groups lower down the school to inspire the curiosity of our younger learners, whilst our older students and prefects have the chance to support our Primary school liaison programme

Competitions etc.

A small number of our students each year work towards the full and intermediate ‘Biology Olympiad’ organised by the Society of Biology with notable successes. Last year for the first time we also participated in the ‘Biology Challenge’ for younger students achieving a number of medals

We also publicise practical and writing national competitions and have encouraged pupils to participate across all levels. In recent years a small number of our students won a prestigious film competition run by Eurostar and Young People’s Trust for the Environment (YPTE). The competition, challenged students to “Have Your Say on Sustainability”- with their prize was to visit the European Parliament and present to MEP’s. Read more here

We have been successful in competitions run by the Chemical Industry and in the local Rotary Technology tournament as well as the University of Cambridge Year 12 Chemistry Compeition
